The masterclasses will be held by 35 top students from elite universities

The Summer STEM Institute is an online program from iResearchInstitute director Serena McCalla. It will feature a bootcamp on research and data science, a masterclass lecture series with students and graduates from Harvard, and a research project whose mentors include International Science and Engineering Fair winners.

“[The goal is to] train students to conduct computational research in a wide variety of interdisciplinary scientific fields”

A course on programming and data science will also be taught by Stanford course assistants Adam Pahlavan and Alex Tsun.

“[The goal of the bootcamp is to] train students to conduct computational research in a wide variety of interdisciplinary scientific fields,” said McCalla, who believes that experience in programming and working with data is extremely beneficial no matter what field of science a student is interested in.

“A significant number of students who go on to be successful entrepreneurs, business-women, and technologists were the kids who were coding and working with data in high school.”

The masterclasses will be held by 35 top students from the US’s elite institutions with the goal to “share the wealth of knowledge of extremely successful young entrepreneurs, scientists and technologists who were high school students not too long ago.”

In the mentored research project, international students will “learn how to effectively communicate their science and engineering projects, giving them a chance to implement their English skills.”

The Summer STEM Institute is running online for the first time from June 21 to August 1. Applications close on May 15.

Note: Following the publication of this article The PIE was told that Serena McCalla is no longer working on the program. Franklyn Wang is now the leading educator.
