Northern College’s campuses are in the Timmins area of northeastern Ontario, a seven-hour drive from Toronto.

Students who had been rejected from Pures College of Technology due to its courses being oversubscribed were told they may be able to transfer to nearby Centennial College in Toronto.

But 10 of the affected students have instead been offered places at Northern College, the public partner of Pures College of Technology.

Northern College’s campuses are in the Timmins area of northeastern Ontario, a seven-hour drive from Toronto.

One Indian student, who wished to remain anonymous, said he would have preferred to study at Centennial College but feels he has been left with few options.

“I don’t have enough time”

“Timmins is quite far from Toronto where I had my… arrangements,” he said.

“I don’t have enough time and all in this I have to arrange accommodation and all in just one week.”

He said that Northern College had made the decision “quite late”.

A spokesperson from Northern College said the institution was committed to “student success” and had staff members to help students locate housing and find employment.

“Northern College believes that student success is as important in the classroom as it is in the wider community and has taken many steps to ensure that students are set up at home to succeed at school.”

Other affected students are expected to transfer to Centennial College.

  1. It’s high time the federal Liberals put a limit on the number of international students admitted into the country. This no-limits policy is putting an unnecessary strain on our housing crisis.
Also there ought to be an equitable distribution of international students from the 192 countries and two states than a disproportionate number from a single country, e.g. 40% from India.

  2. We are not against international students but we see the quality of many services have gone down. These students especially from india & bangladesh are very rude ( mainly in the hotel industry- Moncton). It’s like they are the masters. We came to canada 30years back & had enjoyed the beautiful curtious behaviors from staff that time. But now if we ask some doubt, they cut off the phone without even saying a polite ‘excuse me’. Canada has now become another 3rd world country. Please tell these students not to bring down the beautiful culture of this country. Even in places like Mc Donald’s which is serviced mainly by Indian students, the hygienic value has gone down. No gloves are used while serving ( often they are seen touching their hair & beard while on duty). It’s really pathetic to see, Canada ‘s standard going down. Please instruct them when they take up the job.

    • I agree 👍. Forget Mc Donald’s, TD bank staff were known for their courteous behavior and competence. Not anymore. Recent experiences in relation to a new mortgage and after sales service at a branch has left a bad taste in my mouth.

    • I must sanction that. And they are everywhere in everything. They have no work ethics, very rude, nasty and unkempt and worst of all their hygiene is a big problem. I don’t understand how food companies and agencies can employ theses people to look after and prepare food for customers qhen they smell and have no regards for clensiness. The labour board or companies needs to assign persons to rectify such situations because its really out of hand. HELP, HELP, HELP IS NEEDED

    • I agree with you to some degree. ( being S.asian myself – sine 50+ years)
Many( not All) in service industries today would have been fired in their 1st hour on job!
[ Either they need customers trainning( customers is always right ; motto) or they have A chip on their shoulder; I don’t know which but it needs to change n change for better.

  3. Why is Centennial College enthusiastic about accepting students from Northern College? It seems they prefer the easier route of admitting visa-approved students, bypassing their international admission team, which appears unresponsive and uncooperative, neglecting phone calls, messages, and emails on student applications.

What about the commissions to agents?
What about the Ontario college consortium they created that we will not take transfer students ?
How come Centennial College have so many seats?
When they themselves do not issue offer letters and are not transparent about the full process?

Why the student are given an option shouldn’t ideally they should start the program in Canada after deferring to next intake or an online option if possible.

What Northern College did is a mess but the colleges who preys on visa approved students are no saints and ethically poaching visa approved students is not correct.

The student’s should immediately be sent back and should reapply to a college and then travel or defer to next intake.

  4. I agree majority are coming from India. I think they should allow students to credited institutions such Ryerson, Centenial, George brown, Humber and many more in Ontario, but they are some that I know are not good and get their grades without attending institution. The federal government should check those if they have class attendance.

  5. You guys are so right, they keep bringing in more people and our housing crisis is getting worse, the government is doing more to make sure they have a place to stay then us canadians. Why don’t they start building more housing if they want to keep bringing people in.

  6. I feel sorry for these students. Is it possible that they might have missed making arrangements for their own accommodation and other essential official requirements before leaving their country..Seems instructions are nothe clear to them where they should have asked what do I do get accommodation and any other requirements .seems to me they thought zi hot admission ,I paid fees so my visa will take care of itself ??? Did they sent money directly to college /asked direct communications director questions
Agents don’t take care of it is individual responsibily in my opinion
No one should expect foreign government to take care of other things except official legal visa document
Blaming country after arriving expectations like these amaze me ,these are supposed to be educated students are they thinking right ?

  7. Gov need to stop international students from taking up an over crowding our housing crisis leave them in their own country this is ridiculous people in our own country are becoming homeless with no place to rent

  8. Why do wr keepbending over backwards for international students and immigrants. It is long over due that Canada takes back the country. They are so happy to cone and once they are here or become a citizen they force us to change to there whey. If your so happy here than live here and shut up. Yes the great portion are rude and not great in cleaness.

  9. Indian yes of course but they’re not the only ones other countries also have their own problem especially people from Europe Europe countries when they come to Canada you should be able to learn the language and integrate accurately we all came from different background different ethnicity different culture into a country called Canada they should be famous our government and accessing people for example few people from the European came into the country it’s a refugee they were to waiting 2 years ago get a paper why are us the most wait for 5 years plus what is the Western ideology which is very bad God bless Canada God bless the global community thank you

  10. Northern College is committed to helping foreign students to find employment? Wait, aren’t the foreign students coming to Canada vetted by the government to ensure that they are coming over with more than adequate financial resources. Surely, these students should not have to look for employment and/or access food banks just to survive.

  11. These students are coming here to buy citizenship They could careless about learning anything. This is just another vote importing scam. If Canada didn’t offer citizenship you wo uld be lucky if you had 50 thousand students coming here instead of close to a million. Canada immigration system is the laughing stock of the world.
