British Council MENA reaches over 1 million for ELT

The British Council is celebrating the spectacular success of its Facebook page aimed at English language learners in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. With a growth in Facebook ‘fans’ of over 200% in less than 18 months, the Learn English British Council MENA page now has over a million fans or ‘likes’.

The most popular feature is the ‘English Doctor Service’

This is helping reach its goal of connecting with 20 million English language learners within three years.

A growing number of fans are teachers who can use the page as a platform to interact with their students or to access hundreds of British Council English language lesson plans and other resources.

“We use surveys and analytics to ascertain what the fans want on the page, and then provide appropriate and engaging new content every day in order to help boost confidence and improve vocabulary, grammar, conversation skills, fluency, and pronunciation,” explained Dalia Adel, MENA Digital English Project Manager at the British Council.

The page offers access to high quality resources completely free of charge. The most popular feature, receiving more than 200 ‘likes’ per session, is the ‘English Doctor Service’ where a highly experienced British Council teacher is available online to answer questions, offer advice and tips, and to direct fans to relevant resources.

Nic Humphries, the British Council’s Director of English in the MENA region, said: “Social media, such as the Learn English MENA Facebook page, mobile apps and podcasts, offer the ideal solution to the challenges faced by learners and English language teachers.”

Facebook users continue to rise in the region, with over 45 million monthly active users now.

Said Humphries, ““We have utilised every outreach platform from radio, television, print to digital in order to make learning English accessible to everyone, everywhere and anytime. More importantly, such platforms are designed to help students take control of their own learning.

“Along with our face-to-face teaching offer, these platforms will help the British Council reach its goal of engaging with 20 million English learners by 2015.”
