It’s official – EC acquires LSC in Canada

Ambitious education chain, EC English Language Centres, has announced that it will take over three of the four schools owned by LSC – Canada’s longest-established language school, which turns 50 next year.

LSC (Language Studies Canada) President, David Diplock, announced that LSC Calgary would close, while Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal are now to become part of the EC empire. Malta-based EC has expanded voraciously, growing from nine to 15 schools worldwide in a 12-month period. This is its first foray into Canada and into French language teaching as well as English language teaching (in Montreal).

Diplock will be staying on for a six-month period to ensure the successful integration of LSC into EC.  Beyond that, he will be a member of the Board of Directors of EC Canada for an extended period of time, while LSC’s Gayle Forler, will remain with EC and play a significant role in terms of sales and marketing strategy.

EC’s Chief Executive, Michael Xuereb, said, “I, and several members of the executive and management teams, will be spending the best part of the rest of the year in Canada, with the goal of having the three Canadian centres running as EC schools by the start of 2012. Unlocking the growth potential in both LSC and Canada as a destination will be an incredibly exciting challenge for us, and one I know we will rise to successfully.”

Over the past two years, EC has been strengthening its position in both the UK and USA with new schools in Bristol, Miami and Los Angeles, and has maintained its leading position in Malta and South Africa. Now with its sights on Canada, EC points to a language travel destination “that is set to capture the growth in the industry due to its location, value and variety of academic programmes”.

The company plans to invest in facilities and to develop a wider-range of academic programmes, including exam preparation courses and university pathway programmes. With 49 classrooms in Toronto, 43 in Vancouver and 23 in Montreal, LSC’s integration into EC – which won the LTM Star Award for Chain School this year – puts EC firmly on the map in terms of global operations in the English language teaching sector.
