GoAbroad.com leads aid mission from its Tacloban HQ

A US study abroad company with offices in Tacloban, the Philippines, is coordinating direct on-the-ground relief in the wake of the strongest tropical cyclone ever to make landfall, Typhoon Haiyan. GoAbroad.com founder, Troy Peden, has been helping people leave the area and bring in food and medical supplies.

International enrolments up 14% in the Philippines

According to its Bureau of Immigration (BI), the Philippines welcomed 14% more foreign students in 2012 than the previous year, reflecting the country’s rapid rise as an affordable study destination. The bureau’s student desk approved 47,478 applications for student visas and permits, up from 41,443 in 2011.

Philippines: “Come home after studying abroad”

Philippine education secretary Armin Luistro has called for Filipinos to return home after studying abroad, warning the country is losing its "best and brightest" students but praised the country's new K+12 curriculum in raising standards to meet global needs. He also said he wanted to bring more overseas students to the Philippines, which has seen interest treble in the last four years.

Philippines uses ESL to boost tourism

The Philippines is aiming to attract 4.5 million international tourists this year and part of its tactic is to use the 500 English language teaching centres around the country to bring in students through the ESL Tour Program. At least 30,000 students a year are known to study in the country.
