We need to stop talking about international students as though the United States is doing them a favour by letting them in.
It is not a one-way transaction.
International students contribute to the US economy, universities, local communities, research, innovation and the classroom. And increasingly, the data show just how much the US stands to lose as access becomes more difficult.
NAFSA’s Fall 2026 International Student Enrolment Outlook, published on August 11, “projects that the US could have as many as 111,000 fewer international students in fall 2026. The economic consequences are significant: up to $3.4bn in lost direct economic contributions and nearly 40,000 fewer jobs”.
These numbers should make policymakers pause.
Because behind every percentage point is a student who applied, was admitted, made plans, and hoped to begin a new chapter in the United States.
And many are not moving forward because they suddenly decided they do not want a US education. Barriers are stopping them.
Visa appointment bottlenecks. Processing delays. Travel restrictions. Changing immigration policies. Uncertainty around post-study opportunities. And, for students from countries facing bans or restrictions, the very real possibility that admission does not translate into the ability to enter the country.
NAFSA points to several of these factors as contributing to the projected decline. Its analysis notes “that international applications to US doctoral programs fell 21%, while international submissions through Common App fell 9%, including declines of 34% from Ghana and 17% from Nigeria”.
But the impact goes far beyond the numbers.
I know this personally. When I was a graduate student at Duke University, I used to joke that my program was a mini United Nations.
There were students from more than 20 countries, and it was the first time I had met people from places such as Kosovo or Kyrgyzstan.
That diversity was not a nice add-on. It was part of the education. We brought our experiences from different countries, industries, communities, and political and economic environments into the classroom. We challenged each other’s assumptions. We learned from one another. That is what makes international education so powerful, and that is what America risks losing.
International students bring revenue to universities and communities. They support jobs, they contribute to research and innovation, and they enrich classrooms. They create connections that extend far beyond graduation.
So when international students choose or are forced to look elsewhere, America loses too. This is why I believe we need to change the way we talk about international students.
The US gains from international students, and international students gain from the US, it has always been a two-way street.
They are not a burden to be managed and they are not simply people asking to be allowed into America. They are contributors and partners in a mutually beneficial relationship.
And the United States is not the only destination competing for their talent.
Students have choices. The UK, Canada, Australia, countries across Europe, and other emerging study destinations are actively seeking international talent. If one destination becomes increasingly difficult to navigate, students will eventually take their ambitions elsewhere.
Countries do not remain global education leaders simply because they once were, they remain leaders by continuing to attract the world’s talent.
That is why this conversation is bigger than international education.
It is about economic competitiveness. It is about innovation. It is about research. It is about the diversity of ideas that strengthens institutions.
And ultimately, it is about whether policy decisions are strengthening America’s global advantage or slowly giving it away.
I sincerely hope NAFSA’s projections serve as a wake-up call, because once students, researchers, and global talent decide to build their futures somewhere else, winning them back will not be easy.
The US gains from international students, and international students gain from the US, it has always been a two-way street.
Let’s stop pretending otherwise.
