The University of Hong Kong has been named the world’s most international university in 2022, topping a list compiled by Times Higher Education.

As territory’s oldest institute of higher learning, ‘Asia’s Global University’ boasts student enrolments of more than 18,000, 43% of who are international.

Along with its English-medium programs, its international focus aiming to prepare students to become ‘global citizens’, helped the institution attain the ‘most international’ title for 2022, THE suggested.

Switzerland’s ETH Zurich was placed second, with École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology ranked joint third.

The University of Oxford in the UK was in fifth position.

The ranking is compiled using international student, staff and international co-authorship scores, and international reputation metrics from the THE World University Rankings 2022.

“These institutions all have a high proportion of international students and staff”

“These institutions all have a high proportion of international students and staff, collaborate on research with scholars from across the world, and have a strong global reputation to match,” THE said.

Prospective students looking to study in the world’s most international environments should apply to the universities in Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore or the UK, it added.

The top 20 included seven UK institutions, in addition to three from Hong Kong, and two from both Switzerland and Singapore, respectively.

Austria, Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand and Canada each accounted for one institution each in the top 20.

University of Vienna was positioned 11th, followed by Trinity College Dublin in joint 12th with Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and the UK’s UCL, and Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands at 15.
