British workplace learning specialist, Liverpool Community College, visited China last month to offer advice on apprenticeships and forge links with Chinese education institutions.

Ian Green, Director of Business Development, and colleagues met representatives from more than 65 Chinese colleges to discuss British apprenticeship models and work-based learning programmes.

“Educational establishments in China are keen to understand more about the apprenticeship and workplace learning schemes we offer [in the UK],” said Green.

“We’ve been talking about best practice in this area and how educational establishments can work closer with employers to set up apprenticeships and provide businesses the skilled workforce they need.”

Green said Liverpool Community College was well placed to help improve Chinese workplace learning, which in many regions is still in its embryonic stages. The college is a major provider of workplace learning in Liverpool, and works with local businesses on schemes such as its ‘Work Academy’, in which the unemployed receive training and are guaranteed a job interview at the end of the course.

Elaine Bowker, Principal of Liverpool Community College, said: “The College is playing a broad role in the life and structure of the city, working with employers to help students develop the skills needed by businesses and support growth in the local economy. It’s the benefits of these experiences which Ian has been talking to Chinese colleges about.

“It’s vital for Liverpool that we forge closer links with emerging economies like China. In the long term this could bring investment into the city and lead to closer business partnerships,” she added.

While discussions are in their early stages, the college hopes to partner with one education institute in Beijing, two in Chongqing and two in Shenzhen to provide exchange programmes for British and Chinese staff and students.
