The University of East London (UEL) has won the “Outstanding International Strategy Award” at the fourth annual Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards. It was praised for its Going Global bursary scheme, providing UK based students the chance to travel, linked to their studies, whether for a few days or a whole semester.

The university, which has a campus in Cyprus as well as in London, was also praised for its successful introduction of languages to the curriculum after a nine-year absence of such programming. Its education programmes are also taught at partner institutions in other countries, such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) nations.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Patrick McGhee, said, “The great thing about our Global Reach strategy is its inclusivity… We are equally proud of the experience provided for those studying UEL programmes across our tremendous partner institution network which includes not only the BRIC countries but other parts of the world such as Malaysia, Greece, Singapore and Vietnam.”

The ‘THELMA’ award seeks to highlight staff contribution to international capacity; brand establishment; use of technology; and evidence of shared collaborative ownership of initiatives across an institution’s leadership and management teams.

The judges praised the number of “distinct threads” running through UEL’s strategy with a range of the university’s schools and services fully involved.

Other institutions shortlisted in the category included University of Birmingham, City University London, De Montfort University, the University of Exeter and the University of Nottingham.
