Students from around the world have long desired to come to the United States to study, and for good reason. Despite challenges driven by Covid-19 and the political environment, the US is once again rated the #1 country in the world for education by US News & World Report.

The US is home to eight of the top 10 Best Global Universities and is known for providing students with an iconic American high school experience. And now, as the US leads the world in Covid-19 vaccinations and establishes welcoming new policies towards international education, I’m excited to say that the US is still one of the top destinations for international high school students.

Our team at Amerigo has spent the past year developing new programs to support our students and continue to keep them academically on-track and engaged.

Our students have been split between in-person programs at their American high schools, online coursework in their home countries through our Start Anywhere Program and in-person in China with our Amerigo Landing Program. And while students have been successful in these programs, we’re looking forward to welcoming them back to the US for in-person education this fall as schools are expected to open and life returns to normal.

With a new administration in place, the US has once again become the most desirable location for international students.

President Biden’s decision to let the former administration’s ban on H-1B visas expire sent “a signal to the world that international students are welcome in the US”.

April 27, the US State Department announced that it was easing restrictions on international students coming to the US for schooling. This applies to a wide range of qualifying countries, including China, Brazil, Iran, South Africa and most of Europe.

While further details of this policy are still emerging, this is great news for prospective international students hoping to make the US their study abroad destination.

Additionally, the US is leading the world in distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine. At time of publication, over 40% of Americans have received at least one vaccination, with 25% of Americans fully vaccinated. The country continues to deliver 3 million shots per day on average, with teachers and school staff being among the first to receive the vaccine back in February.

As the rollout progresses, high school students over the age of 16 are now eligible for the vaccine in most places in the US, with younger students soon eligible as well.

Now is also a great time for international high school students to get familiar with the US education system as they begin looking forward to university applications. The US is home to many of the top universities in the world – eight of the Top 10 and 28 of the Top 50 Best Global Universities (US News and World Report) are based in the US.

Due to Covid, many top universities have moved to a “test optional” policy, not requiring ACT or SAT tests. This policy is expected to remain at many schools in the upcoming years. In fact, Amerigo’s Class of 2021 has received 75 acceptances to Top 50 Universities so far this year (including a record-breaking nine acceptances to New York University!) – and 23 of those acceptances were at test optional schools.

The US has a well-deserved reputation of developing academically rounded students.

Through engaging coursework and small class sizes, robust extracurriculars, competitive athletics and more, students who study abroad in the US are prepared to succeed in university and beyond. Contact Amerigo today to start your US study abroad adventure.
