International medical school St. George’s University in Grenada is strengthening links with the UK and a global pathway provider in a bid to boost numbers of students travelling to and from the Caribbean island.
An agreement with NCUK – The University Consortium will see the establishment of a pathway to study medicine or veterinary medicine in Grenada, while a separate announcement will see the expansion of a joint medical training program with Northumbria University.
“We strive to send our graduates where they are needed most”
President of St. George’s University Grenada Richard Olds said the agreement with NCUK will see aspiring physicians and veterinarians from the consortium’s global network of study centres study in St. George’s University.
“This important agreement will provide international students with a passion for medicine a direct pathway to a top medical education from St. George’s University,” he said.
Students who enrol in the medical pathway at one of NCUK’s study centres around the world and meet St. George’s University’s admissions criteria are guaranteed a place to complete either the institution’s Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees.
“We are confident that the partnership will provide opportunities for many young people wishing to study medicine,” Maria McKenna, regional director (EMEA) for NCUK said.
“NCUK’s global network of Study Centres are excited to introduce this new dedicated medicine pathway and looks forward to helping many young people realise their dreams of pursuing a medical degree at a leading medical school.”
Meanwhile, the agreement with Northumbria will see students complete up to two years of their pre-clinical and medical education in the UK, and continue to one year in Grenada before undertaking two years of clinical rotations, partially in the UK, the US or Canada.
“For many of our students, the UK is a more convenient location in which to pursue their studies,” Olds added.
“This relationship with Northumbria offers our students flexibility while ensuring they receive a top-notch education identical to the one we provide in Grenada.”
Graduates of the program will be eligible to apply for the Widening Access to Specialty Training, an initiative within the NHS that provides a pathway for UK medical registration through postgraduate training.
“We strive to send our graduates where they are needed most,” Olds noted.
