Australian language training group, Lexis, is expanding its portfolio of schools to Kobe, Japan, where it will offer Japanese language programmes to international students and test preparation English programmes to local students. Managing Director Ian Pratt says he is determined to forge success in the competitive Japanese marketplace.

“We are going all out to become a significant player in what is quite a competitive market in Japan”

“Japan represents the largest investment we’ve ever made in a new campus,” said Pratt.

“We’re operating from a landmark, A-Grade building in the heart of Kobe and are going all out to become a significant player in what is quite a competitive market here in Japan.”

Due to open on January 5, Lexis Japan is the largest investment the company has ever made into a school campus and will have 10 classrooms and capacity for 120 students.

“There’s absolutely nowhere else in Japan, and very few places in all of Asia, that offers so much to visitors as Kobe, and we can’t wait to share it all with our students,” said Pratt.

Lexis Japan joins Korean language school, Lexis Korea, as the second Asian centre and seventh school overall, while the other five are located throughout Australia.

Both Asian centres also run evening ELT courses to reach the local market, providing international and local students with the opportunity to have language exchange ‘meetups’ and cohesive buddy socials.

“We are now looking to Asia as the next stage of development for the Lexis brand,” Lexis’ Aimee Broad told The PIE News. “We were very much taken aback by the rapid growth of our school in Seoul, and the response from agents on Kobe’s opening has already been quite remarkable.”

“The idea is that it’s very hard for international students to make local friends – at Lexis, it’s textbook,” she added.

Lexis welcomes more than 5,000 adult and junior language students each year to its programmes across Australia and Asia. It also conducts large-scale training programmes for high schools, corporations and government bodies and operates Lexis TESOL Training Centres in each of its locations.
