Tapping growing Chinese demand, leading student insurance provider International Student Insurance (ISI) has launched a Chinese language portal.
The US-based company, which offers specialised health and travel insurance to students from around the world, is also working through Chinese social media and search engines to reach more Chinese students.
“Students from China feel more comfortable reading in Chinese, even if they can read English well, and certainly their parents and grandparents want information accessible to them,” said Morrison Kwong, marketing associate at ISI.
“Most students will not be able to access English webpages if they are using Chinese search engines and social media platforms,” he added.
According to the Institute of International Education (IIE), there was a 23.5% increase in the number of Chinese students who went to study in the USA in 2011, bringing the total to 157,558.
However, said Kwong, a former Chinese international student from the University of North Florida, many are unaware they can waive their university’s insurance plan for cheaper options.
Through
the ISI portal students can learn about the company and its policies, as well as accessing customer service in both Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese.
ISI, whose main policies are underwritten by Lloyds of London, has previously launched services in English, Spanish and Thai languages.
Another major international education player to have translated their site into Chinese is IDP, the Australia-based agent chain, whose
China portal launched in November.
