Academic pathway provider will “co-run” language and English-medium degree programmes: INTO University Partnerships, is expanding into China with a new twist on its model of working with universities to tap into demand for a Western education – and pathway programme, which is marketed by INTO but delivered by the institution itself.

In April, the UK-based company announced that it is now working with two Chinese universities to help recruit and prepare Western students interested in studying in China. At the moment, interest is mainly in short-term language programmes, but INTO “will seek to buck this trend, transforming the universities’ international study propositions by shifting the focus away from short-term programmes and towards long-term academic courses taught in both Chinese and English”. It will offer summer language programmes and, in tandem with the universities, deliver undergraduate and postgraduate degrees taught in English from September.

According to INTO, international student numbers in China are expected to reach 500,000 by 2020, making China the number-two international study destination after the USA. It hopes that its partnerships with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE) in Dalian and the Communication University of China (CUC) in Beijing will allow it to capitalise on the growing appeal of China and Mandarin study.

“Our innovative degree programmes also promise to reposition DUFE and CUC in the eyes of international students by offering high quality degrees in English to rival Western providers. They will set the tone for INTO developments with other universities in the region over the next few years – strengthening the INTO brand and making it more distinct among partnering organisations in the sector,” commented Stephen Healy, INTO’s Managing Director China and Asia.
