The future of India’s ongoing higher education reforms could soon have a distinctly Australian-flavour after prime minister Narendra Modi met with the chief executive of the Sydney-based Education Centre of Australia.

Singh founded ECA in 2004 after graduating from the University of Southern Queensland

According to ECA, founder and chief executive Rupesh Singh met with Modi in December 2018 to discuss a variety of topics, including the future of higher education in India as well as the impact and confusion of recently implemented changes to the goods and services tax.

India has been undergoing education reforms in the past few years, and the country has a clear goal to improve the lives of citizens and increase educational opportunities.

In 2010, Modi declared the period India’s “Decade of Innovation” while 2015 saw the launch of Smart Cities initiative for urban renewal.

Singh, who originates from India and founded ECA in 2004 after graduating from the University of Southern Queensland, discussed the Smart Cities initiative with Modi as well as opportunities for sports training.

Another key point of discussion, according to ECA, was the 2018 application of GST across to education services, which caused confusion among education agents and heated debate between higher education providers over the responsibility of paying the tax.

A PIE News exclusive revealed all Irish, most Australian and some Canadian universities had agreed to cover the additional 18% charge.
