A close alliance when it comes to education looks like an inevitable outcome of recent government talks between Germany and Vietnam.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has been in Vietnam and spoke highly of Vietnam’s socio-economic development achievements, especially in poverty reduction and in fulfilling many UN Millennium Development Goals ahead of schedule, as well as the country’s increasing position in the international arena.

Regarding educational cooperation, Germany pledged to continue support for the building of the Vietnam-Germany University, as well as increase scholarships and create favourable conditions for Vietnamese postgraduates in Germany. Meanwhile, Vietnam will facilitate the teaching of the German language at high schools.

Merkel and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung agreed to strengthen cooperation and mutual support at multilateral forums and international organisations. Vietnam is ready to serve as a bridge for Germany to strengthen ties with ASEAN countries.
