An international student has won the award for Student Leader of the Year at Queensland University of Technology in Australia for the first time.

Tri Mulyani Sunaharum, also known as Yani, from Malang in Indonesia, was presented with the award in a presentation evening last week.

“I am especially proud of fostering and maintaining good relations between young people of Australia and Indonesia”

The awards recognise students from QUT for outstanding leadership and engagement, both within the university and the wider community.

Sunaharum is currently undertaking her research in Urban and Regional Planning, and is also the first PhD student to the win the award.

She has been studying at the university in Brisbane since 2012 when she started her Master’s degree.

Outside of her studies, Sunaharum undertook the role of President of the Science and Engineering Faculty Higher Degree Research Student Society, in addition to Vice President of the QUT Indonesia Students Association.

“Doing a PhD is hard and intensive work so participating in other activities is a good way to stay balanced and motivated,” she said in a statement.

“I am especially proud of fostering and maintaining good relations between young people of Australia and Indonesia.”

Sunaharum holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Brawijaya in Indonesia.

She is also involved in Engineers without Borders and a board member of the Australia Indonesia Youth Association Queensland Chapter.

QUT is an ambitious international institution with over 7,000 international students. It was also the first Australian university to forge a research agreement with the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology in China, in March this year.
