The pro vice-chancellor and provost of the UK’s first ever full overseas branch campus has been celebrated in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Christine Ennew was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of her contribution to international higher education.
Ennew was instrumental in developing Nottingham’s two transnational branch campuses in Malaysia and China and has led the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus for the last four years.

During her time at the helm at UNMC, Ennew has championed internationalisation and has overseen partnerships in Indonesia, India, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Brazil, along with continuing growth in student numbers, growth in research activity and innovations in course delivery.
Under her leadership, UNMC has also developed offshore programmes in Singapore and Sri Lanka.
Nottingham’s Vice-Chancellor, Sir David Greenaway, described Ennew as “an accomplished academic, a superb leader, and a perfect role model”.
“She has given great service to our university and made contributions which will endure,” he extolled. “This public honour is welcome recognition for the value of those contributions.”
During Ennew’s tenure, UNMC has also secured a number of accolades including the Athena SWAN award for its commitment to supporting women and a five star rating in the Malaysian research assessment exercise.
She has also led plans for expansion of the campus, as well as the one in China.
Ennew said she felt “deeply honoured” by the award.
“It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have been engaged in the increasing internationalisation of both the University of Nottingham and UK higher education more generally,” she related.
“I am particularly proud of what has been achieved through our innovative campus development in Malaysia and the impact that this has had in both countries.”
