According to the British Council, one in ten current world leaders have studied in the UK and proportionately, the UK is more likely to produce a world leader than the USA. To maintain relations with high-flying alumni, the British Council has launched a campaign to recognise outstanding graduates from China, India and the USA.

Research carried out by the organisation shows that when total students in each country are measured, UK universities produce one world leader per 50,000 graduates compared to the US which produces one per 500,000.

“The UK sector and government needs to recognise that hosting a student is more than just someone spending a few years living here, it’s the start of a life-long relationship”

Past international students of the UK’s higher education system include Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott, Former US President Bill Clinton, President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos and Prime Minster of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong.

As part of its campaign to strengthen alumni relations, the British Council has launched awards for alumni in each country recognising achievements in three categories: the individual’s chosen professional field, entrepreneurialism and social impact.

Finalist will become part of a new international alumni network giving them access to an events programme and the opportunity to connect with fellow alumni.

“As higher education internationalises and technology makes new forms of learning ever more accessible, traditional paths to power are changing rapidly,” Head of Education Professor Rebecca Hughes said.

“If we want studying in the UK to remain on that path, we must reach out and celebrate our millions of alumni from around the world. The UK sector and government needs to recognise that hosting a student is more than just someone spending a few years living here, it’s the start of a life-long relationship.”

Finalists will be announced in 2015 and winners will be invited to the UK to connect with government and industry leaders in a sector of their choice.
