The governments of Argentina and the UK have signed a deal in Mendoza to ensure mutual recognition of master’s degrees studied in the nations’ HEIs.

The agreement states that degrees earned will be “considered academically comparable”, according to a statement. Furthermore, it allows for direct access to doctoral programs in the second country for master’s graduates.

“We focused on master’s doctoral access – that’s where we can get agreement”

The arrangement has been negotiated, at least in part, because of the low levels of current Argentina-UK student or academic mobility.

“The numbers in recent years have been low. However, that is the point of this new agreement – it will be a big help to promote greater exchange between the countries,” a UK Naric spokesperson told The PIE News.

As part of the agreement to allow access to doctoral programs with Argentine or British qualifications, the nation’s master’s degrees will also be mutually recognised as comparable.

But the effort to manage and recognise cross-border qualifications will continue, The PIE understands.

A UK government statement hinted at further cooperation between the nations’ academia, and a spokesperson for UK Naric, part of the European qualification recognition network and the body which helped draft and negotiate the agreement, confirmed conversations were ongoing.

“There are continuing discussions on the comparability of the bachelor’s awards in Argentina and the UK. It will take longer to move towards an agreed position on broader matters of comparability,” they said.

The spokesperson also noted that the agreement is “narrower” than would be hoped, and than is the case with other completed or ongoing negotiations with other Latin American nations.

“This Argentina-UK arrangement is narrower in scope than other recent Latin American mutual recognition agreements. We have focused on master’s awards and doctoral access – that is where we can get agreement at this moment.”

“This agreement forms part of a broader effort by the UK to build stronger relations between the UK and Latin America. These relations are really strengthening, with recent signings of agreements between the UK and Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Colombia, for example, and ongoing discussions with Brazil,” they added.
