Online boom “not a threat” to language schools

The online language learning market is booming as students seek more flexible modes of learning, claims uSpeak, a rising star in the space. However, it says that the trend does not threaten traditional language schools, which are already incorporating e-learning into their offerings.

Rosetta Stone buys social tech site LiveMocha

Language learning software giant Rosetta Stone has bought online language learning site LiveMocha for US$8.5million in cash, it has disclosed. It said the social community of 16 million learners using online technology to learn and share would help it realise its ambitions to be the most ubiquitous technology-based learning platform in the world.

Language tech start-up Babbel raises $10m

Competition is hotting up in the online language learning world after German startup Babbel sold a US$10 million stake to help it expand internationally. Founder Markus Witte said he hoped to break into the French, British, Italian, Spanish and Brazilian markets.
