As study-work policies fluctuate in key study destinations, internships are becoming an effective and popular way for students to gain valuable on-the-job experience. To varying degrees, countries and private providers are developing strategies to enhance the role of internships within study abroad and as a stand-alone international experience. The Council on International Educational Exchange has pledged $20m in study abroad scholarships and will sponsor 10,000 student passports to support the Generation Study Abroad initiative. This the largest donation to date to the five-year project.

Answering to the growing demand for international work experience, leading international education exchange organisation CIEE last month merged with US-based Academic Internship Council.
