President Barack Obama has announced a new initiative to increase the number of K-12 students in the US studying Mandarin over the next five years to one million, in an extension of the 100,000 Strong programme.
A campaign to encourage and enable UK students to gain studying or internship experience in China was launched this week by the British Council, with an ambition to see at least 15,000 UK students in China by September 2016. Funded study and intern opportunities will be up for grabs, with a university roadshow planned to promote this and the wider importance of gaining China experience.
Entertainer will.i.am has secured a grant from the 100,000 Strong Foundation to enable underserved students from Los Angeles to learn Mandarin and study in China. $100,000 will be made available to support youngsters from the Boyle Heights neighbourhood.
