UEA withdraws from London INTO partnership

The University of East Anglia (UEA)’s London campus will stop offering degree courses in September just four years after opening. The university says the move will allow it to focus on delivery standards for its Norwich students and raising its international profile.

Remaining students at UEA London will have the option of transferring to the Norwich campus

The decision "has not been a financial one", according to the university

The UEA London Study Centre is a joint venture with INTO University Partnerships, which will continue to operate from the site.

The university said the “vast majority” of undergraduates will have completed their studies by September

Times Higher Education has said that the campus lost £7 million in its first three and a half years, but a UEA spokesperson told The PIE News that staff “do not recognise this figure” and the decision “has not been a financial one”.

“The university has invested an appropriate level of funding into the project over the last five years, resulting in exceptionally high student satisfaction ratings and exceptional student outcomes,” she said.

In a statement the university claimed the withdrawal is part of a “wider strategy to focus on areas of core strength and streamline its course offering”.

Of the 1000 students currently at UEA London, around 325, or 2% of the university’s total population, are enrolled on higher education courses, while others are studying on EFL and pathway programmes.

INTO will continue to offer IELTS preparation, intensive English and other EFL courses from the site, as well as foundation programmes. Its partnership with City University, through which the centre offers foundation courses, has seen a 33% increase in enrolments over the last year.

The university said the “vast majority” of undergraduates will have completed their studies by September. Those who have not will relocate to the Norwich campus or be offered assistance to continue studying in London.

Jeremy Lindley, Managing Director of INTO University Partnerships in Europe, said: “We are proud of our work with the University of East Anglia in developing opportunities for students to obtain high quality degrees in London.

“We look forward to the continued success of our London centre, which is expanding to meet the needs of students looking for high quality educational opportunities in the capital,” he added.

UEA will continue to work with INTO on a number of initiatives, including a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) for prospective international students hoping to study in the UK.
