U-Multirank: student mobility higher in business schools

Business focused schools have higher rates of student mobility than other higher education institutions, according to the latest U-Multirank global rankings, which have been released this week.

The results span a total of 13 subject areas, up from six last year

Business schools, or other higher education institutions which specialise in business and economics, make up half of the top 25 ranked institutions by student mobility.

U-Multirank, which enables users to generate customised rankings according to their chosen criteria, also places 11 French institutions among the top 25 performing institutions in student mobility.

“Traditionally business studies is among the most internationally oriented subjects”

IESEG School of Management, in Lille, comes out as the best performing institution globally in the student mobility indicator, which incorporates both incoming and outgoing mobility.

University of Management Varna in Bulgaria, ranks as second, with the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management coming in third.

“Traditionally business studies is among the most internationally oriented subjects,” said Frank Ziegele, from the Centre for Higher Education in Germany, one of U-Multirank’s partners.

“In particular specialised business schools have been trying to recruit international students for years; and often have joint programmes with other business schools which increases the number of incoming and outgoing students,” he added.

Other French institutions which have placed in the top 25 for student mobility include Toulouse Business School, École Central Nantes, and Sciences Po.

This is the third year U-Multirank has released rankings, since its launch in 2014. This year, there are 1,304 universities featured in the rankings – around 100 more than last year – from 90 different countries.

The results also span a total of 13 subject areas, up from six last year.

“Upcoming readymade rankings will be published at various times throughout the year”

The subjects of biology, chemistry, mathematics, history, sociology and social work/welfare, have been added for this edition.

Unlike other global university rankings, U-Multirank does not provide an overall league table. Instead, users can generate a unique comparison based on metrics that are most important to them.

For example, ranking criteria include amount of income from private sources, graduation rate and research publications.

U-Multirank does, however, provide a readymade ranking based on research and research linkages.

Rockefeller University ranked top in this area, followed by MIT, Harvard University, Stanford University and Hanken School of Economics.

Ziegele said more readymade rankings will be released in the coming weeks.

“Traditionally we have included readymade rankings on international orientation, as well as by age in research. Upcoming readymade rankings will be published at various times throughout the year.”

The results of each university were compiled from data supplied by institutions, international bibliometric and patent databases, as well as surveys from over 105,000 students at the participating universities.

The mobile version of the website has also been launched this year.

“The new mobile version allows users to find their best match, save favourites, compare specific universities they have in mind – or based on similarities – and access comparative information,” said Ziegele.
