Spanish learning tech co. raises €0.5m

A new Spanish language learning tech start-up, uSpeak, has raised €0.5 million in funds to help it carve out market share in the gaming-meets-education technology sector.

uSpeak says its apps use a system that create totally unique game-driven learning experiences for every user

"We've taken principles from applied linguistics, neuroscience, behavioural psychology and gamification"

The company claims to be unique in having built a language learning system that replicates the way that a brain processes the relationship between words and their meaning. Its app is available for iPad and iPhone.

“We’ve taken principles from applied linguistics, neuroscience, behavioural psychology and gamification to tap into your natural ability to learn, rather than just dragging you through a minefield of soul destroying flash cards or multiple choice translation questions,” trumpets uSpeak, which is based in Madrid.

The fledgling company is reported to have attracted the attention of angel investors which find resonance in the company’s belief that language learning experiences need to adapt entirely to the learner.

uSpeak says its language learning methodology combines learning the true meaning of words in a natural way through gameplay, with reading, watching and listening to real, high-value content produced in the countries and cultures represented by the language you are learning.

“If it’s not thought-provoking it’s not in – this is our motto.”

uSpeak also offers apps for Spanish speakers keen to practise their English.
