The EARTH Scholarships will offer support for in-person or hybrid exchanges to Scotland for up to three-months in 2023. Applications are open for arts and humanities PhD and Early Career Researchers.

The scholarships will “generate powerful collaborations between art, humanities, and education to address the significant global issue of climate change”, according to British Council director Scotland Leigh Gibson.

“Universities and higher education institutions have a central role to play in driving innovation to help us cope with oncoming challenges – in public discourse, and in building understanding of the science,” she added.

SGSAH, the world’s first national Arts and Humanities graduate school, is “uniquely placed” to offer the program, with its “excellent experience in widening access to international opportunities”, Gibson emphasised.

Scholarship awardees will be placed at one of SGSAH’s 17 member institutions, and will go on to have the opportunity to network with the other scholarship holders and Scotland-based PhD and ECRs working in the environmental arts and humanities, the school’s director Claire Squires noted.

“The scholarship holders will… [also have the opportunity] to meet with arts and cultural organisations in Scotland, benefit from cohort training and development opportunities, and to feed back to Scottish academics and organisations their own experience of researching responses to the climate emergency,” she added.

The EARTH Scholarships compliment the Saltire Emerging Researcher program that SGSAH offers in partnership with the Scottish Funding Council, the partners said. British Council added that the new initiative builds on the legacy of its Climate Connection program, while SGSAH noted it aligns with its GREEN/GRADUATE Strategy and Operational Plan.

“I’ve no doubt that the research, discussion and the global networks generated will have a lasting impact in Scotland and globally,” Gibson concluded.

The deadline for applications is Monday November 7, 2022.
