Russia’s int’l student enrolment on the up

International students in Russia are up 40% since 2013, according to a statement by Russian deputy minister of science and higher education Marina Borovskaya reported by Russian State Agency TASS, adding that the country could aspire to host 425,000 international students by 2024.

“Even today, we can state that our universities have become more appealing”

“Even today, we can state that our universities have become more appealing,” she said, according to TASS’ report.

“In the period from 2013 to 2017, the number of foreign students had been growing constantly and had gone up by more than 40%, which now constitutes about 290,000 foreigners studying at Russian universities.”

TASS added that according to Borovskaya, the number of international students in Russian universities could reach 425,000 by 2024.

In line with the deputy minister’s announcement, IIE Project Atlas figures show that the number of international students in Russia has been growing. IIE reports 296,176 international students studying in Russia in 2017, up from 282,921 the previous year.

In 2017, international students in Russia constituted 5.6% of all higher education students, according to IIE figures.

A leading researcher at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration recently told The PIE News that the overall number of international students in the country is currently 313,015, with Kazakhstan, China and Turkmenistan comprising the top three sending countries.
