The 20 new books aim to support teachers and parents teaching children English via “fun and action-packed adventures”.

The PAW Patrol: The Movie is hitting movie screens this year, after the TV series launched on Nickelodeon in 2013.

The PAW Patrol Reading Stars graded reader books for 3–6-year-olds use simple vocabulary and grammar, and colourful illustrations which the partners say “play an integral part” in making the vocabulary clear to the learner.

According to OUP research, graded reader books offer children far more benefits than traditional story books for language acquisition in non-native speakers.

“What could be more motivating for a small child than helping their favourite characters out of a tight spot and ensuring that they successfully complete their mission? Whether it’s helping Ryder choose the best pup for the job, selecting the right tool for Rubble, or spotting something from up high for Skye, the children are placed at the very heart of the action, and the exciting stories unfold around them,” said Series author Hannah Fish.

“These readers help children to develop their English language skills and build their confidence in reading while having fun. The simple language combined with carefully crafted illustrations ensure that all children are taken on a journey across Adventure Bay, regardless of their previous exposure to English.”

The books offer gradual progression over three levels, OUP added. The publisher also hopes the resources will foster a lifelong love of reading, and help to bring early years learners back off screen after a year of lockdown ‘screen time’.

The paperback books are available now and e-books will be available in October.
