INTO in plans to set up two campuses in Malta

Malta may soon see a boost in foreign tertiary students, if plans to set up two private campuses by partnering organisation INTO University Partnerships get the green light.

Labour leader Joseph Muscat said if elected on 9 March his government would support INTO's plans to open two private campuses

INTO hopes to attract 3,000 foreign students to Malta and Gozo

As Malta gears up for general elections on March 9, a delegation from INTO has met with the opposition Labour party to discuss its intentions, but says it will work with whichever government is elected. It has not been revealed whether one of INTO’s partner universities, or a new partner, will be involved in the campus.

A spokesman for INTO told The PIE News: “We are pleased to be entering into a dialogue with politicians in Malta to raise the academic profile of the island, which is already well-known for delivering quality english language courses.

“They are looking for a partner to internationalise their approach, recruit international students for academic programmes and ultimately, establish the country as an education hub.”

INTO, which has partnerships with 18 universities in the UK, China and the US, would like to open two campuses in Malta and Gozo. It sees the two Maltese Islands as attractive because of their climate,  geographical position, and the prevalent use of the English language.

It hopes to attract 3,000 foreign students by offering courses in medicine, management, finance and economic development.

Labour leader Joseph Muscat confirmed that, if elected, a Labour government would facilitate the project. “We are ready to work with everyone who wants to expand in this sector,” he told The Times of Malta.

He added that the University of Malta should not see the development as competition because agreements with foreign universities would offer students more choice and not equate to less funding.

Since 2006, INTO has built a large portfolio of partnerships with public universities delivering pathway programmes, degrees and English language courses. At the start of the year, the company announced it had sold a 25% stake to the US private equity firm Leeds Equity Partners for £66 million.
