Canada: UCW offers $455k to int’l students

University Canada West in Vancouver is stepping up to provide CAD$455,000 in financial relief to international students who are required to self-isolate for their first 14 days in Canada.

UCW has also compiled a list of isolation resources for incoming students, which includes special accommodation rates for its students at various hotels. Photo: UCW

The university is providing each student self-isolating in a hotel with a $650 voucher, as well as additional support. This $455,000 commitment to incoming students is meant to help offset the cost of self-isolating away from home for two weeks.

“This initiative will help ease the extra financial burden our students now face”

“These are already uncertain and challenging times for our students,” said UCW president, Brock Dykeman.

“This initiative will help ease the extra financial burden our students now face when they come to Canada to pursue their education.”

Students arriving in British Columbia are currently required to submit a self-isolation plan, a legal commitment to self-isolate that is enforceable under the Public Health Act.

The plan must include where the student will stay, how they will get there (it can’t be on public transit), how they will get groceries, and how they will access essential services and medical care.

“We want our students to know that we are here to support them,” Dykeman continued.

“In addition to the financial support, our Student Affairs team will conduct regular check-ins to ask about their mental and physical wellbeing, and will provide them with online social, wellness and entertainment activities.”

UCW has also compiled a list of isolation resources for incoming students, which includes special accommodation rates for its students at various hotels in Vancouver offering isolation packages.

The vouchers are valid for new students starting their UCW program in the October 2020 term, either face-to-face in Canada or online and arriving within three months after travel restrictions are lifted.

“The health and safety of our students, staff and faculty are at the forefront of our response to Covid-19,” Dykeman said.

The university recently announced a return to on-campus learning for the fall term.

Starting in October, UCW will implement blended learning program delivery, meaning that many students will have both online classes and limited on-campus learning.

Students will do online preparation work for their course before attending on-campus learning sessions with professors. UCW is introducing comprehensive safety measures as we prepare to welcome students back.

Students unable to take classes in Vancouver for the fall term will still be able to take their classes online and start on-campus studies at a later date.

  1. I am not a student and I am based in South Africa.

I would like to Express appreciation to UCW for the initiation. With an understanding of associated costs. It is indeed heartily to see such a commitment to students by the institution.

    Forward with education!

  2. This seems to be a remarkable effort of the University to secure the students and support them.
A great step ahead to a beautiful future.

  3. I m already enrolled to ucw but due to covid 19 i donot have my visa approval yet but i feel very bless & lucky gor cjosen this university. Hope so i’ll get my visa soon.

  4. It’s a good initiative taken by UCW. It helps the international students who are very depressed at this time for their studies and career plans. Other universities should also take these kinds of initiative to help the students, because international students plays an important role in the Canada’s economy.

  5. Hello U C W we as a parents of international students of appreciate you warm welcome. at this time of covide..periods. we would like to thanks….Mr BROCK thanks and regard

  6. I would like to highlight serious shortcomings on behalf of the university. Although university is marketing heavily to gain popularity amongst potential students but there are other concerns which all prospective students should be aware of. I’m a current student and along with me many other students are suffering currently. Firstly the University has made entry so easy that even a below average student can get admission here. The real problem is as prospective students come in large numbers, they bring in tremendous amounts of money for the university. In turn the university tries to capitalize on this and tries its best to fail as much students as possible. Even if you did your best you’ll always fall at average marks which is between 72and 75%. Every term more than 400 students enrol in this university but every year only 150 students graduate. Now amongst this number many students drop out in between and change universities. This is a direct revenue stream for the university. Now calculate 400(student per term) *7000(fees per term)*4(no. Of terms per year) = $11,200,200 revenue per year. Considering this revenue, I don’t think $455k is anything. They are deliberately fail students which again makes revenue for them as the students need to repeat those subjects again. My advice would be to go to any other university such as VIU, RRU or NYIT. Do not get in a university if their entrance is so easy. Its not worth your hard earned money!

  7. What initiative for existing students? What about the mental pressure UCW is giving to the existing students? Why 74% of class average matters rather than individual assessments? and last do the new students are aware that UCW does not like dissent?

  8. They are only posting positive comments, this section is moderated meaning they will not allow any real comments. Its paid media.

  9. That is such a good initiatiive, I have my acceptance Letter from UCW too for the Fall 2020 semester, but due to the Covid19 lost most of my income and have to cancel unfortunatly.
But respect to the University that it takes into consideration their students at this dificult time.

  10. Ucw… Thanks .. other Canadian universities like UOT
Waterloo UOG etc must also provide some assistance for quarantine for international students .
They should not treat inter istudents like milking cows . Thier parents are also passing through difficult phase

  11. Wow,wow and Wow!! What amazing University ! I m international Student from Rwanda and I applied To proceed my MBA program at UCW specifically within this Fall Semester / from October 2020, And I hope to get my Visa Soon.
We are very lucky to be among Your students.
    Your Services are incomparable.
*Keep Being very Best University through your Excellent service, considerate and Kind-hearted staff*

  12. Is there any other current student at UCW who wants to speak to the alleged deliberately failing students so they have to repeat courses which means more money for the school ?
