Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Darla Deardorff has been appointed chair holder of the new UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Competence at Stellenbosch University. This appointment concludes Darla’s 19 years as executive director of the AIEA, association of international education administrators. Holding myriad positions in the sector, Darla is also a research fellow at Duke University and the founding president of the world Council on Intercultural and Global Competence, a nonprofit partner to the UNESCO Chair. She brings to Stellenbosch over 30 years of experience in international education, and has lived, taught and worked in Germany, Japan, South Africa and Switzerland. Upon her new appointment, Darla said, “I look forward to starting this new chapter in focusing fully on intercultural aspects … Through this new UNESCO Chair, we will be addressing research and capacity building around the role of intercultural competence in 3 key areas: peace building, gender equality, and climate action.”
