The English Language Travel Market in Malta accounts for one in every 18 incoming tourist to the Maltese Islands according to the Minister for Tourism Kermenu Vella.

Speaking at FELTOM‘s (Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations of Malta) annual general meeting, he pledged the government’s full support to the EFL industry. Although official 2013 numbers have not been published yet, Vella said there are indications that students spent €145 million in Malta, €10 million more than last year.

Vella lauded the collaboration between the government and FELTOM, a relationship that has allowed the ELT industry to “grow and prosper” according to David Xerri, EFL Monitoring Board Chairperson.

“The rebranding confirms that FELTOM is characterised by verve and forward thinking”

“The fact that we share a common vision in relation to the importance of maintaining very high standards in both the academic and non-academic spheres means that Malta continues to consolidate its reputation as one of the foremost ELT destinations worldwide,” Xerri told The PIE News.

This year FELTOM will start a rebranding campaign to coincide with its 25th anniversary. A new logo has been unveiled and the new website will be launched in March alongside the organisation’s annual workshop.

During the AGM, FELTOM’s CEO Genevieve Abela said over the last year the group focused particularly on its growing role as a local stakeholder.  She added that increased efforts in marketing and visibility were paying off as the FELTOM brand and accreditation was gaining in stature abroad.

In March, FELTOM will host what organisers say will be its largest workshop to date, welcoming overseas agents to the island to visit local schools and explore the culture.
