The number of Chinese who return to China after studying abroad rose significantly last year, with government incentives, China's buoyant economy and the effects of tougher job markets abroad driving the trend. A total of 186,200 Chinese returned home by the end of 2011, up from 135,000 in 2010.

A record 340,000 Chinese students studied at universities abroad last year according to China’s ministry of education. Figures show a rise of 55,000 students on 2010, a 20% climb. However, when viewed against 2007 figures, this is up by almost 200,000 – well over 100%.

Signalling a surge in demand for English in China, two of English language training’s biggest players have announced major expansion plans in the country this year, citing figures of up to 300 million English language learners in the country.
