NZ: “learning experience” drives student satisfaction
Feb 07
A new report from New Zealand has found a very high correlation between overall international student satisfaction and the quality of a student’s learning experience—and that “living and support” services play a much smaller role. University students who were “very satisfied” with their teachers, facilities and course were 27 times more likely to report higher overall satisfaction than those “very dissatisfied”.

CAPS-I to lead trade mission to Turkey
Feb 06
Public schools from across Canada will participate in their first ever trade mission to Turkey. Led by the Canadian Association of Public Schools-International (CAPS-I), the trip aims to attract high school students from Turkey and expand Canada's ties with the country. High school fees average around CAN$12,000 a year per international student.

Business was brisk at this year’s ICEF Dubai Workshop, with agents from the region and educators holding some 3,900 targeted meetings about placing students. As raised during the event's seminars, outbound mobility from UAE is predicted to rise, along with the numbers going to the region.

US “on track” to send 100,000 students to China

Considerably more Americans are studying in China than previously thought, according to a new study from the Institute of International Education. It also claims the US is likely to meet its goal to send 100,000 students to China in four years by 2014, despite fears to the contrary.

Australia: scammers target student visa holders
Feb 05
Student visa holders in Australia have been tricked into paying large penalty fines to offshore accounts for unlawfully working beyond their visa conditions. DIAC issued a warning to international students to be aware of individuals impersonating their officers; with more than 300,000 student visa holders in the country at risk, it is taking the scam "seriously".

EU launches new university rankings

A new university ranking system aimed to provide a more realistic and user-friendly guide to higher education institutions – and challenge the hegemony of today's leading rankings – was launched by the European Union in Dublin last week. 500 universities from across Europe and the world are expected to take part.

Malaysia: two-year moratorium on private HE
Feb 04
Malaysia has announced a two year moratorium on new private tertiary institutions with the aim to raise its status as an educational hub. "Highly rated" foreign campuses are exempt from the freeze. Currently there are 414 private colleges in the country - a figure Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin considers too high.
