UCL raises £150m to fund strategic vision/UCL East

One of London’s most prestigious universities, UCL, has announced that it has raised UK£150 million in financing to enable it to achieve its strategic vision for 2034 which includes building a new campus in east London on the Olympic Park site as well as refurbishing its Bloomsbury campus.

London's Olympic Park site will be home to UCL East as well as a new campus for University of the Arts, London and a new V&A Museum centre

“London can be the global capital for higher education and we see this development as being an important step in that direction"

UCL East will be the new east London campus situated in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which is set to become an Education and Cultural Quarter.

The first phase of the new campus is expected to open in 2018 and be a “radical new model” of how a campus can be embedded in the community and with businesses.

Professor Stephen Caddick, Vice-Provost (Enterprise & London) at UCL said that UCL East represents the largest single expansion of UCL since the university was founded nearly 200 years ago.

“Our new site will be a beacon of how universities should work in decades to come – outward looking, connected to the local community and providing facilities to businesses to work on site to bring new discoveries and inventions out of the lab and into the marketplace,” he said.

“London can be the global capital for higher education and we see this development – alongside many others in London – as being an important step in that direction.”

KPMG Capital Advisory Group announced the new £150m revolving credit facility, led by HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds and RBS.

Its strategy articulates a desire to foster greater links with other HEIs, especially in the “global south and east”

Phil Harding, Director of Finance at UCL, added: “We are a global university, with a proud history of academic leadership and excellence in the heart of London. Our 2034 vision will take us on a 20-year journey as we build a university for the 21st century and one that addresses the challenges and opportunities of the future.”

The 2034 strategy has six principle themes: academic leadership; integration of research and education; addressing global challenges; being accessible and publicly-engaged; delivering global impact; and being London’s Global University.

UCL already has a campus in Australia and Qatar and its strategy articulates a desire to foster greater links with other HEIs, especially in the “global south and east”.

It states an aim to “build international bi- and multi-lateral higher education partnerships in five to eight major global cities to help us deliver our international ambitions” and develop its Grand Challenge expertise which fosters research excellence around global health, sustainable cities, intercultural interaction and human wellbeing.
