Int’l ed career training targets newcomers

An online professional development programme has been launched, targeting people interested in kick-starting a career in international education.

The course lasts six weeks and will be accessible online

The Global Pro Institute, which is accepting enrolments to start next week, will show course takers how to position their past experiences and skills, grow their network, develop their personal brand, as well as provide advice for job searches.

“A lot of people don’t know how to translate passion for these experiences into the real work that we do in international education”

Brooke Roberts, creator of the Global Pro Institute and the founder of Inside Study Abroad, a website and blog providing insights and information on study abroad, said that the course targets people who may have studied or volunteered abroad, but are looking to turn that experience into a career in the industry.

“The problem is a lot of people don’t know how to translate passion for these experiences into the real work that we do in international education,” she told The PIE News.

The course lasts six weeks and will be accessible online to people anywhere in the world.

While there are other professional development courses in international education, Roberts asserted that “none of them are really positioned to help pure newbies.”

“One of the unique selling points on this is that it is for people that are new and don’t already have that background.”

With more than 10 years of experience in the field, Roberts said she designed the course to offer pragmatic training for newcomers.

“I really tried to tease it out in a way that people wouldn’t get overwhelmed, they’d see it as a truly actionable project that you can see some real results with,” she said.

The first cohort of participants will begin the course on Monday of next week, with 33 enrolments so far.

The course costs $395 for the six weeks, and Roberts plans to run the Global Pro Institute again in spring of next year.
