Madden has recently retired as the former Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at Griffith University and is now Strategic Advisor to Griffith for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

He was recognised for “distinguished service to tertiary education, to the strengthening of collaborative international education partnerships and cultural cooperation, and as an educator, role model and mentor”.

“The award of an AO gives wonderful recognition on two levels,” Madden told The PIE News.

“Hundreds of thousands of young men and women from around the world enrich Australia, culturally, economically, educationally, and socially.

“Australia is a much better place with these courageous and adventurous students, and Australians who live and study overseas, and who live and study with international students here, are profoundly and positively enriched by the experience.

“The award also recognises the attractiveness of the Australian culture to the world: a generosity of spirit, a friendliness and tolerance, and a drive for excellence both educationally and in the student experience,” he commented.

“I’m delighted I won it, as it puts a small spotlight on intelligent, adventurous people, and an industry that is quietly changing the world.”

Griffith’s Acting Vice Chancellor Professor, Adam Shoemaker, said that Madden has been “central to the strategic placement of Australia as a desired destination for international students”.

William Spurr, Director of Sealink Travel Group and former Chairman of Education Adelaide, the body charged with attracting international students to the state, was also recognised for his contribution to Australia’s international education sector.

Spurr, whose was previously Chief Executive of the South Australia Tourism Commission, was awarded an OA for his “distinguished service to tourism, to education, particularly through international marketing, to the arts and sport as an administrator of institutions and events, and to the community of South Australia”.

“I’m deeply honoured and feel very humble because you haven’t done it by yourself, but rather in working alongside a lot of very committed and motivated people,” he commented.
